Present Arms

Charles Ranchero, rumoured to have at one point been thrown out of the Mid-Movement Chorus for inappropriate outbursts, is performing at Hill House on Saturday the 6th of June. His latest piece is an arrangement for a musket quintet. The muskets will fire volleys at one of Ranchero's latent sound structures. The piece is another venture into the play between sounds and smells for Ranchero and promises to be very exciting indeed.

If rocks could talk...

Andrew Beswick of the HHC has a new exhibition opening at the HHC Honestly gallery. Beswick has arranged for a prominent geologist and renowned linguist to team up and tell us what the earth is trying to say. Measuring the seismic vibrations in different parts of the world and comparing them to different forms of human and animal communication they have come up with some interesting conclusions.

Potato Cake

Irish poet CaitrĂona Devery has generously donated a poem to the HHC. Her latest work explores poetry as a means of illustrating a process. Though not vastly different from her usual work, CaitrĂona's latest writing uses humour as a bed for her ideas. "I like to write about what I know. This poem explores a process of memory, inference, guestimation and experimentation."

Potato Cake

100g flour
400g mashed potato
salt
50g grated mature cheddar cheese
tablespoon chopped parsley

Sticky Bindings

Sarah Fotheringay-Phipps and Barmy Carthwrite's latest creation "Sticky Bindings" is a tape bonanza of withering proportions. An avalanche of different coloured sticky tape has transformed the Honestly gallery into a giant psychedelic spiders lair.

Barmy, a good friend of the HHC, said of the exhibition in his typically ambiguous fashion; "with these current economic troubles boring the arse off everyone and his gran it falls to artists like us to waste a load of time and money watching gallery technicians stick a load of tape round the inside of a white box. We see the obvious Jim Lambie connection but our work is much better because we don't restrict ourselves to the floor."

The local church will be holding flower arranging classes in the gallery every Wednesday and Thursday at 11am.

Spike Island Open Studios

Spike Island doesn't seem to be letting any crunch get in the way of busy as usual. The ex-tea factory opened the doors to its studios on Friday night to a crowd of curious art enthusiasts. Spike is probably right to try and inspire some interest in art practice at this point in time for obvious reasons. They can't expect to weather the storm purely by maintaining their slick appearance and stock of organic apple juice. I'm not sure how their residents will fare but I imagine most won't be too worried...click here for full review

Exhibition Preview

The Hill House Collective are proud to present an exhibition by Herbert Sally. In the exhibition space there will be a tabletop bar, often the most absorbing part of an exhibition on the opening night. This bar will be alone in the space and instead of being removed after the opening night this bar will be left standing, continuing to sell drinks throughout the week until the end of the exhibition. Far from being a criticism of the art world this work celebrates the ability of art enthusiasts to enjoy an exhibition preview without enjoying the art and promotes abstract discussion free from outside influence.

Starting 30th March - Hill House

Artist Talk

THIS THURSDAY - Artist Pip Longshanks will be giving a talk on his most recent work Turtledove in which he spent 2 lunar cycles living as a primary school caretaker. The Mid-Movement Chorus

The Hill House Collective is proud to be hosting the launch party for a rare recording of that elusive ensemble The Mid-Movement Chorus. Their Mahler 6 will be premiered on Monday the 30th March in the magnificent Scotchman public house in Bristol. In keeping with tradition, no members of the MMC will attend but there will be a talk on the significance of this recording by someone with an intimate knowledge of the motivations behind the work.

Sunday 8 March 2009

Red End Salutations

The Hill House Collective is lending it's support to the Bristol based art-performance enterprise: Red End Salutations. RES will be performing their radically authentic production of The Tempest at the Buxton Fringe Festival. RES, famous for their motorway readings of Enid Blyton, will be calling on the expertise of noted Shakespearian scholars to help with every detail of the production.

Grids, Gags and Ads

The HHC has once again hosted a fabulous evening of lectures. Three good friends of the collective were kind enough to speak to us about their work. Three very different subject matters made for a captivating event.

Louie Lister (of Circular Forms) talked to us about his most recent installations exploring misdirection and authority.

Edward Whitney (author of "The Land of Foam") was kind enough to read us an excerpt from his soon to be published and as yet unnamed essay regarding politics, humour and the public.

Arthur Keegan-Bole (associated with The Nose) explained to us certain delights experienced while grappling with means of muse for musical composition.

An excerpt of Edward Whitney's essay will soon be available on this blog.
